Peak to Peak Gondola Opens in Whistler

After two years of hype and millions of dollars the maiden voyages of the peak to peak gondolas made there way from Whistler to Blackcomb and vice versa.

This engineering feat broke two world records one for the longest free span gondola (distance between pillars) a whopping 3, 024m and the greatest distance from the gondola to the ground 436 m.

All of this is well and good but the big problem I see and any local can see is a lack of care and regard for the community and employees of Whistler Blackcomb.

As a Snowboard instructor my wages were cut and justified with a B.S seminar explaining my wages, I don’t need a seminar to understand how I get paid unless you’re trying to screw me. What about the Whistler Daycare? I donated nearly $1500 dollars to that daycare with Jack Nosegaard and Jason Kawaguchi from the proceeds we made teaching mixed martial arts, even with that money the daycare could have used alot more help. What about sustainable living? What about community spirit?

I saw F the worl records, F intrawest, and F the big wigs that see it fit to spend millions on new projects and cut everywhere else and hurt their low to middle end employees and the community.

On the positive side it only takes 11 minutes to get across from each mountain so I won’t mind hitchin a quick ride over to 7th heaven to shred pow with some friends.

Top 10 Terrain Parks in North America

With snowboard parks getting bigger and badder every year it’s extremely difficult to choose one winner. The following list is my personal opinion of the best parks of 2007/2008 and will hopefully follow trend for this season.

10. The Canyons, Utah

9. June Mountain, California

8. Buttermilk, California

7. Park City, Utah

6. Mammoth, California

5. Breckenridge, Colorado

4. Keystone, Colorado

3. Northstar, California

2. Bear Mountain, California

1. Whistler/Blackcomb

I know what your thinking I’m biased because I live in Whistler and the truth is maybe. However the fact of the matter is if there was a better park that I wanted to train at for the season I would and the truth is Whistler/Blackcomb’s parks are insane with every feature and size of jump and rail imaginable. The best part is we get so much snow and have a wide range of amazing terrain from alpine, cliffs, tree runs and more!

Whistler Opens!

Well this isn’t breaking news since Whistler has been open since November 27 but unfortunately it didn’t open with the same bang it did last year and the year before that.

With only a couple lifts open on both mountains and almost as few runs Whisterites are praying to Ullr for snow. As I rode the mountain today I almost needed ear phones to drown out the sound of my edges scraping on ice.

So today I’ve decided to use my newly found guitar skills (very weak I might add) to write a song for snow, its only a couple chords and some secret versus and chants that hopefully will attract snow instantly!

I urge all of you out there to create your own dance, festival, or prayer for snow and send all those vibes toward Whistler Blackcomb mountains PLEASE!!!

thanks Matt and all of Whistler

How Watching Snowboard Videos Can Make You A Better Snowboarder

Imagine that you could program your mind to learn snowboard tricks simply by watching snowboard videos, the reality is YOU CAN. I’m sure you have a couple snowboard videos at home and you’ve spend hours watching the same videos over and over again. This simple strategy you’re about to learn will allow you to program tricks into your mind as you sit on your but and watch those videos.

You see that even when you’re watching the video without thinking about it your mind is analyzing the movie in detail and your unconscious clearly understands how to perform the tricks you’re watching. Using this technique I am about to share with you will magnify the power watching videos has on your unconscious and conscious mind allowing you to literally program the tricks into your body.

The Strategy: The next time you sit and watch a snowboard video I want you to do two things. First as you watch analzye in  detail the riders entire body as you see them perform the trick. Clearly understand what every limb in their body is doing through out the entire trick (head, arms, feet, hands, etc). Now at the same time imagine what it feels like to perform the trick! Feel what it’s like to spin the 360 or slide the rail. This is the most important part use your imagination to clearly feel what it’s like to perform the tricks you want to learn. The more you do this and the more you can create the feeling in your body the better the programming will work.

Now throw in your favourite vid and enjoy watching it in a brand new way, the best part is you’re doing very effective training as you sit on your but and enjoy a movie!

How You Can Become a Snowboard Prodigy, The Complete Formula Revealed!

Have you ever watched a snowboard video and found yourself wondering how the hell they can do those tricks? Me too and after years of struggling I believe I have found a formula you can use to become that good or even better.

You see there are 2 types of riders. The first group of riders are ‘naturals’, these people perform and learn snowboarding quickly because of past sports, mindset, or a combination of the two. The second group have to work to develop great snowboard ability. The best part is even the naturals have to work and even if you have no ability whatsoever hard work will always pay off!

Whether you are in group one or two your ability is about to skyrocket. Sounds good right? Well I’m about to share with you a strategy you can learn to start programming all the tricks you want to learn this season right into the very core of your being, the trick will be ingrained into your muscle tissues and mind.

Before you continue reading remember the following equation

NO WORK = NO IMPROVEMENT

SOME WORK = SOME IMPROVEMENT

LOTS OF WORK = LOTS OF IMPROVEMENT

You choose, all you need is about 20 minutes a day. Stay consistent and you’ll blow your mind!

Ok now if you’ve read this far I’m sure you’re ready for the formula, so here it is!

STEP 1 “BODY”: You must have the right body and flexibility to perform hard snowboard tricks. You train hard for hockey, football, soccer, basically all sports. Why not for snowboarding?

Here is a circuit I invented to give you all the muscles you need. Perform each exercise for 30 seconds before moving on to the next

a) High Knees: Jump up and down repeatedly bringing your knees as high as you can into your chest.

b) Situps

c) Burpees: Jump in the air, then squat and kick your feet all the way out like a pushup, bring your legs back underneath you, and explode up again.

d) Running on the spot: bring your knees as high as you can with every stride and keep your hands up to your face.

e) Jump 360’s: both pretending to go switch and regular jumping into the air spinning a 360 rotation focusing on technique of spin and exploding through your legs. This is kind of a down time, do your spins properly with style.

***** Stretch for 10 minutes full body before and after *******

Step 2 “FOCUS”: In order to start learning both easy and difficult tricks you need to first develop the base layer of skills to build off. The way you do this is to mimic the tricks as much as possible whenever you can. For example if you’re learning rail tricks set down a broom pretending it’s the rail and focus on proper technique jumping into the board slides. If you’re learning to spin jump spins at home focusing on technique frontside and backside switch and regular. MIMIC THE MOVES OVER AND OVER on and off the hill. You can butter most tricks on the hill and start on small features. Doing this allows your body to begin programming all the muscles of your body and builds muscle memory needed to go from landing the trick for the first time to doing the trick without even thinking about it. Watching snowboard videos and analyzing their technique is a great way to learn the correct technique.

STEP 3
“MIND”: Have you every heard the expression sports is 90% mental and 10% physical? I believe that but for snowboarding it’s 95% mental and 5% physical. It’s all in your head! When you try your first 360 you deal with fear, when you stare down a handrail your heart starts to race, when you hit the first jump of the day, when you get in the zone, when you feel that you can land any trick you want. Snowboarding without a doubt is all mental. Now with that said how do you develop a strong mental game? The first step is to start visualizing your tricks. If you have never visualized before don’t worry it gets easier with practice. You should also visualize your tricks in 2 ways the first is to see yourself perform the trick as if you were a spectator watching yourself. The second is to “feel yourself” do the trick. It is important in all visualizations to imagine yourself doing the trick perfectly each time. Visualize before you go to bed, in the car, on the lift, as much as you can, and most importantly before you try the trick you want to do.

Since you’ve read this entire article you are now armed with all the information you need to begin improving your snowboarding. The important part now is to act on what you’ve learned and make snowboard training a daily habit. I urge you to start today and continue for one week, there’s no time like the present.

“The very problem of mind and body suggests division; I do not know of anything so disastrously affected by the habit of division as this particular theme. In its discussion are reflected the splitting off from each other of religion, morals and science; the divorce of philosophy from science and of both from the arts of conduct. The evils which we suffer in education, in religion, in the materialism of business and the aloofness of “intellectuals” from life, in the whole separation of knowledge and practice — all testify to the necessity of seeing mind-body as an integral whole.”

The Secret To Eliminating Fear and Shredding with Unshakable Confidence

I can vividly remember the day I truly understood this secret and how powerful it was, I can remember clearly because my snowboarding hasn’t been the same since. Fear, slow progression and many other problems vanished as I began to feel more confident, learned tricks quickly and basically just became a better rider.

You’re probably becoming curious about what the secret is so I will reveal it to you now. The secret to developing mind blowing snowboard ability is in using “MENTAL IMAGERY” the problem is most riders don’t do it and if they do they don’t know how to make it effective. Before I go any further allow me to prove the power of this method with a short story

Curious about the power of the mind and the use of visualization and sports Australian Psychologist Richard Allen decided to conduct a test on basketball players shooting free throw shots. He divided the players into 3 groups. Group 1 was asked to practice shooting free throws everyday for 30 minutes for a week. Group 2 was asked to not set foot in a basketball court and group 3 was asked to mentally rehearse making free throws for 30 minutes a day. The results were astounding.

Group 1 who had practiced for 30 minutes a day for a week improved 25%, Group 2 did not improve at all. Incredibly group 3 who merely visualized making free throws improved 24%!

It is widely know among elite athletes and coaches in all sports that imagery and visualization are essential to becoming the best you can possibly be. When done correctly imagery will literally hard-wire and program the tricks into your mind and body.

This one secret is so extremely valuable because to your unconscious mind there is no difference between reality and the things you imagine. When you visualize yourself performing tricks on a snowboard you are literally creating new neural pathways in your mind which will allow you to learn the trick without even being on the snow. That means landing more tricks more often, progressing faster, fewer wipeouts, and extremely fast progression.

If you have read this far then I am certain you have the intelligence to realize the more you visualize the better snowboarder you’ll become. Visualize yourself performing the tricks you’re working on and becoming the rider you want to be.

The more you visualize the better it works, most riders don’t visualize and the great riders practice imagery all the time.

I kid you not, Imagery alone can change your life. I challenge you to visualize doing all your tricks in your mind for 10 minutes a day for a week and see what happens next time you go snowboarding.

All Hail the Skate Banana

Finally several years after the revolutionary reverse camber Lib Tech Skate Banana was released they’ve been awarded the good wood seal of approval.

Arguably eratic and odd construction were thought at first but after years of testing and riding the reverse camber Banana has proven to be the wave of the future.

This feature makes it easier to float in the pow, kill the jumps, rails, park, pipe, ice, and whatever else you’ll come across on the hill.

I have a feeling soon most boards will feature this ground breaking technology, until then look to companies like Lib Tech and Gnu to provide you with this technology.

Way to go Banana, I knew you could be GOOD WOOD

3 Tips for Getting Back Into Shape for the Season

The weather is changing and the gym is getting busier as avid skiers and boarders are trying to burn off their beer bellies they developed over the summer drinking beer in excess by the BBQ. Here are some simple tips you can use to get the ball rolling

1. Workout while watching TV - you may not be motivated to go to the gym right away and if you are going to the gym you may have trouble staying consistent. If that is the case for you an easy fix is to do some pushups and situps while your watching TV. You’ll be suprised how fit you can get if you do some exercise during commercials.

2. Don’t do it all in one day - getting back into shape can’t be done in just one day. You see the benefits with consistency not intensity. Keep it simple and try to do a little bit everyday.

3. Watch what you eat - I am certainly not suggesting you go on a diet I am simply saying follow this advice. Make sure you eat enough fruits and vegetables everyday. The more you can eat properly the better you’ll feel.

I’m sure if you’ve read this far than you can let go of that mouse and drop and give me 20. No time like the present, get to it!
